My Lady of the Long Queue

There was nobody there in departures
No nobody no-one at all
Except for the uniformed lady
I faced at the end of the hall
She was masked but I think she was smiling
A welcoming look in her eye
I turned on my heel as I reached her
But she knew that it wasn’t goodbye
Returning to where I had started
Pursuing a parallel track
I wheeled again facing my lady
And walked fairly speedily back
Then keen to continue my journey
I showed her the back of my head
Still following nobody’s footsteps
And stepping in nobody’s tread
I’m laughing at you said my lady
I thought it hilarious too
To march by myself in formation
Pretending that I was a queue
We laughed with our masks on our noses
I put my whole world in her tray
My glasses had steamed up completely
To light up her solitary day

A masked and short-sighted audience misses a performance of something
