Unsuitable Verse for a Mothers’ Day Card

Babies are too much work
I hope it was fun for you being a mum
From the very first wipe of my tiny wee bum
The mopping of piddles and snotters and sick
And everything smelly and sticky and thick
I'm glad I've forgotten our earliest days
My lack of control and embarrassing ways
I must have felt guilty commanding such care
With hindsight I wouldn't have started from there

So would it be better you mightn't agree
Just not to begin with a baby like me
But more like a sturdy new foal or a calf
Give birth to a child of say five and a half

Complete with a schoolbag and sandwiches made
All ready inside a big egg that you laid
Emerging with questions and desperate to play
Or else have a tadpole and give it away

  1. Excellent poem, as ever, and the illustration is lovely. I was a bit concerned that you were leading up to things having gone full circle… luckily not! I was not expecting the fully furnished eggs.
